The subtle power of ‘Invisible Work’

Perimenopausal Skin: Understanding hormonal changes.....
The fear of looking 'done' at the age of 40 or 50+.
Yes, you will be surprised, but ladies are still scared of stigma and the prejudice that society may give them.

The reason we decided to write about this sensitive subject is because the media is so often misleading about it and because it is also feels truly personal to us. We see more women coming through the door, feeling timid and even shy to speak about their skin changes, and how that directly affects their self-image and confidence.
For the young ladies reading this, let this be an introduction to the transitioning journey. For ladies approaching your 40's or who are in your 40's/ 50's, let me tell you confidently, that we live in the age of Transformations!
Perimenopause (otherwise known as the years leading up to the menopause) is a time of profound change. Yes, yes, you have heard of the hot flushes, mood shifts, sleep disruption and now your skin is also undergoing a quiet transformation of its own.
In reality for many women in their 40's and 50's, the mirror begins to reflect subtle changes: a new dryness, less radiance, or a softening of facial contours, that in combination may contribute to a 'sad looking face' - fatigued and tired look or even rapidly aged skin.

Although very daunting, this is not the end of your Prime Era!
At the MX Skin and Laser clinic, our primary goal has always been about cultivating confidence - helping to reduce the fear of losing 'the looks' that you are so accustomed to, whilst encouraging you to proudly embrace your age.
We are big on motivation here, as you can tell; it's one of the most rewarding aspects of our job to help you build your confidence back up!
Look at it this way - it does not matter how old you are, you can lack the confidence to face society and have different insecurities at any age.
For example, you could be a gorgeous 25 year old obsessing over tiny fine lines or a 50 year old who has now noticed the appearance of a softer, less contoured jawline. Women have always been self-critical, haven't they?
So why not be a flourishing 40, 50 or even 60+ year old who is an aspiration to younger generations and an inspiration to yourself?
NOW, before you rush to the mirror to check for perimenopausal symptoms, let's explore possible symptoms and their causes:
Is it Hormones, Sun Damage, or Ageing?
This is the question underneath every consultation we have on this subject and almost nobody separates the three. Each one has different causes, different timelines and most importantly, different answers.
Treating hormonal change with a pigmentation protocol, or sun damage with HRT, is how women waste a great deal of money.
Below you can read about hormonal and sun damage symptoms and how to tell them apart ( see the table).

Now let's go back to the subtle tweaks that we mentioned before.
Please do not demonise the word " tweaks". Indeed your aesthetic treatments can and should be barely noticeable.
The correct aesthetic medical treatments are designed to help you maintain your current appearance while improving the health of your skin. These treatments aim to ensure that age-related changes become barely noticeable over time.
Benefits of Aesthetic Treatments you should expect
Enhancement of skin texture and tone
Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
Improved skin elasticity and firmness
Increased hydration and radiance
Prevention of further skin damage
We hear it so often during our consultations : "I do not want to look done".
By choosing the right aesthetic medical treatments, you can effectively support your skin's health and appearance, making age-related changes less apparent as time goes on. There is so much confusion circling around Aesthetics that our clients still feel anxious about looking like they have had work done. And this is where MX Skin & Laser Clinic comes into play. It is our job to answer all your questions and debunk the Myths!
Meanwhile if you feel like you would like to have a word with us about your skin, feel free to book your consultation:
Here are the questions you can ask yourself to help understand what your skin is going through!
e | Hormonal | Sun damage | Chronological ageing |
How fast? | Noticeably quick. Months to a few years, often described as a steep change | Very slow, over decades, then suddenly visible | Slow and steady across a lifetime |
Where? | Everywhere, including areas never exposed to sun, i.e. Shins, forearms, trunk | Only where light lands. Face, chest, hands, forearms | Everywhere, evenly |
What skin looks like? | Dryness, itch, loss of firmness and bounce, thinner skin, new adult acne | Brown marks, mottled tone, coarse texture, deep lines, broken capillaries | Fine lines, gradual volume loss, thinner skin, slower healing |
The clue | It arrived alongside other changes: cycle, sleep, mood, joints, temperature | Compare your face to the skin on your inner upper arm or inner thigh i.e, thinnest skin (do you see a difference)? | It is happening to your friends at the same rate |
What actually helps? | A conversation with your GP, barrier repair, collagen stimulation treatments like micorneedling | Prescription skincare, peels, pigment protocols, and SPF for the rest of your life | Protein rich diet, regular treatments at a clinic you trust, and realistic expectations |
